What’s one small change that instantly made your beats sound more “professional”?

This, and just generally focusing on mids whilst mixing. Avantone Mixcubes really help me with that.

How do engineers get mixes that translate between different systems?

Mixing in headphones or normal monitors never gave me mixes that translated, then I discovered Auratones/Avantones, the little mid-weighted cube speakers you see in photos of studios. Now my mixes translate to everything from monitors to cellphones to home stereos to car stereos. Mixing with proper

Anyone Using Auratones?

Auratone sells their A2-30 amplifier that they make to drive their passive monitors. It's pretty budget conscious. I have it, plus a pair of the newer passive Auratones. I think they're great for checking your midrange, and the A2-30 is a nice small form factor that can fit on your desk. Mine sits b

Anyone Using Auratones?

No auratone, but am using avantones--they are extremely helpful to clear up the midrange, as too much congestion sounds awful on them in a way that might only sound mediocre on full-range, ported speakers. My understanding is the Avantones are a bit more hyped than the Auratones, but this works real

Anyone Using Auratones for Mixing?

I haven’t found too many people who own the model of Avantone Mixcubes that I bought back in ‘09 (I’d love to know how they compare to the OG Auratones). They were the redesigned amp versions (after complaints of noise from the power supply on them) and came with signed frequency charts by Ken Avant

Help choosing speakers

Right now I'm just using my single Avantone mixcube + HD650s (with Sonarworks correction) and they get me about 95% of the way there with all my mixes. Untreated room and sort of temporary living situation so I won't be changing that. My midrange feels great on just these two. I occasionally test in

Drum levels vs everything else is tripping me up

Try switching to mono to check levels. On speakers/monitors. Or, get an Avantone mixcube. This never lets me down when getting levels right. It may take some time to get used to (it's strong in mid frequencies) it but, it's very good for levels especially when posting audio to social media (mono/wea

Narrower > Wide Mixes

I've never used the Auratone. Because it's mono if you have something hard left (or right I forget) it doesn't represent on the Avantone. I'm running it as an ALT from my Apollo Twin. It's not a huge deal, I know it so if I want to check something that's blind I just pan it over and then put it back

Home studio upgrade

I would say forget about upgrading gear (in your case) and collaborate more or with different people. I know it seems like a stupid answer but at least with me, I find that a lot of times it’s novelty that keeps me wanting to buy gear, with the rationalisation of “if only I had this I would sound be

(New guy) Drums sound fine in headphones but are wayyy too echoey on small speakers

Could be phase. This is the fun of mixing. The speaker test. Where the mix sounds great on something then elsewhere falls apart. I got some headphones from avantone that let you switch from stereo to mono and then another setting that emulates their mixcubes which messes with midrange. These things
