It will work but R is memory hungry. Look for a used / Refurbished Air with 16GB RAM. Apple has it for 750, you can find an M3 Air for about $600 on eBay if you look carefully. You can also add AppleCare to one of those for piece of mind.

Can be hard to compare like for like but looking at Surface Pro X on the Australian store it's more expensive than my MacBook Air M3 24 GB for a completely inferior product. 16 GB Ram not 24 and less powerful GPU lol. And right now I can M5 Air with 32 GB for $2399 AUD vs Surface Pro X 16 GB for $25
