Smallish PC Speakers?
They are supposed to go behind/above your monitor. Anyway, without something like that you're very limited by height as you mentioned. Other than the already mentioned, here are a few decent options: iLoud Micro Pro (206mm) M-Audio BX3 (208mm) Genelec 8010 variants (195mm) - these are by far the bes

Speakers for a laptop
I bought a pair of Adam Audio D3V a few months ago for music listening plugged into Mac Mini M4 via USB with 3-foot listening distance on desk. I'm very satisfied with sound quality especially bass without a sub. Sound stage and imaging are amazing too.

Looking for more budget friendly speakers for music production for my son.
Well then I would go with the edifiers. If your budget were a little higher, I would recommend these refurbished Adam D3V. Adam is an excellent professional studio monitor brand. So I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy refurbished from them. https://us.adam-audio.com/products/d3v-refurbished

Desk reflections at 130 Hz — experimenting with MDF stands under PSB Imagine XB
I don't think 130 Hz is result of desk. That frequency would have to come from woofer, which is already very close to the table surface. The wavelength of 130 Hz sound is about 3 meters, and constructive interference requires a distance to a reflective boundary that sums to some multiple of about 3

I only have an hour today. Shame me for plugin it in to $50 Monitors off of Craigslist.
I had D3V. Super happy withe them. Amazing sound, decent lows. Great value for money. If you can afford something at a higher price even better. Imo there's a difference in audio quality between Yamaha and ADAM.

At what point does audio quality stop improving and just start exposing your soul?
This usually starts around 3K for the speakers. It's mostly directivity and lower distortion levels across the frequency spectrum. At 10K for speakers you enter gagaland - special speakers that look beautiful - but not better than a good Genelec setup. Mostly not even measured in. Because EQ = the d

Speakers for a laptop
$300 is not a lot for studio monitors, but there are still a few specific models that measure, and sound better, than their competition in your price range. I'm unsure if tariffs have driven up these prices at all, but the Kali Audio LP-UNF and Adam Audio D3V released at either $300 or $350 and are

Advice Needed: Near/Mid-Field Speakers under $700 Upgrading from Edifier MR4 (Active/Passive options)
Active studio monitors (like Kali Audio products) have boundary reinforcement switches. I.e. they have controls to lower the bass if you place the speakers near one or more boundaries (wall, desktop, corner, etc.). That’s not a feature you are going to find in passive speakers or many powered speake
