I love my osprey mutant 38. It can do pretty much anything you ask of it. Also, check out hyperlite's prism or crux packs.

I can’t help but hoot & holler when I ski
Osprey Mutant 38 with the brain removed. I wouldn’t recommend it specifically for ski touring though—it’s more of an alpine climbing/mountaineering pack. I got it several years ago as a do-it-all pack because I was on a budget, and have yet to replace it because it works fine.

Need help choosing the right backpack
Probably not helpful, but I picked up the Osprey Mutant 38L for its size and versatility. It has an external cover to tightly attach and hold a helmet in multiple places. It has external rope tie downs (I use my 70m with it). It has a removable top that adds more stash space. I can put everything in

Phantom 38 or mutant 38
A bag is a bag... I use the mutant 38 and like it. I think Osprey's backpacking heritage really shines in that it has a very supportive frame, and I've overloaded it with 40+ lb.

Recommendations on alpine daypacks
I’m rocking the Osprey Mutant 38L. Not the lightest but made well, has a couple options for helmet carry, crampons on the outside and ice aces or tools. Can be stripped down or full use. Really impressed by it so far.

Should I get a Mountaineering Specific Pack?
Yes, it is nice to have a climbing pack for climbing! It fits better with climbing motions, has better straps for climbing-specific gear, and also, I don't want to damage my lightweight overnight pack while scrambling. I have the Osprey Mutant 38 and love it, but don't think it's a market standout.
