Phone/computer back ups + media
Yeah this is totally doable and not overkill. A 2-bay NAS (like Synology DS224+) with HDDs is enough, SSD NAS is unnecessary unless you want speed over cost. Use Immich for photos and Plex or Jellyfin for movies on TVs. You can keep it off most of the time, but realistically once you start using it,

Alternatives to iCloud storage?
Buy a nas such as a Ugreen nas or Synology older than 2025. I got a DS224+ for $150 locally. Filled with 2 12TB drives for $300 locally. Owning your own data is the way.

MyCloud Replacement
I had a 4tb MyCloud for years, even replacing its internal drive with a 10tb WD Red drive, and connecting external USB drives to it. It's 100mbps network connection was making it feel slow. I replaced it with a Synology DS224+ early last year and I'm completely happy with it. Was more expensive at a

Corrupted hard drive with ALL my pictures over the last 2 years
I was using cloud and singular usb’s randomly overlapping each other and two weeks ago i finally got myself together and bought a NAS. I went with the synology ds224+ that has two hard drives and i installed 2x 4TB harddisks from them they I «mirror» (raid1). I still have all the other bunch of disk

Which NAS would be best for a home media server?
Well I'd better be careful in case I upset the Synology fans downvoting my question .. lol If you're specifically after a 4 bay then Synology probably IS outside your budget but you could probably pick up a cheap DS224+ which is a 2 bay and quite good for streaming as the CPU has a built in graphics

I want to start own home server using an old laptop are these specs enough
If you want to future-proof for Plex, look for a DS220+ or DS224+ on the used market. The "+" models have Intel CPUs that can handle hardware transcoding, which is the main thing the J series can't do. A used DS220+ goes for around £150-200 depending on condition — more than the DS215j obviously but

Netflix adding ads across all membership tiers
This is a good crash course in it: https://au.pcmag.com/video-streaming-services/106840/how-to-set-up-a-plex-server-to-stream-your-own-media I had my friend in IT help me set it up so I didn’t mess it up lol, but it was relatively simple and now that it’s set up it’s so easy to manage. Mini PC for homeserver
For a NAS, I'd be wary of having all the connections be through USB. For your price range, I'd probably look for something like a used Synology DS224+ or something. Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, you could probably turn one of these into an all NVMe type NAS with 2 slots. That would be i
