I moved from a DS224+ to a UGREEN 4800 Plus. I'm very happy with the move. I know there is some software from Synology that you might miss, but to be honest I never used anything from them aside of DSM.I don't like propietary software, specially when it comes from Synology. I don't trust them at all

NAS Suggestion
I guess it depends on your problem space. I don't want/need another photo browser. I use iCloud / Apple Photos for that. Which synology NAS for transcoding very high quality movies
As ppl have said already, it depends on if your playback device supports the codecs used in the media for direct playback (no transcoding), or if you'll have enough bandwidth in the network to even do direct playback, or if you'll transcode it in case some codecs are unsupported. the Synology Beesta
