I don't have any back issues (touch wood!) and I am not tall, but just thought that it might be useful to flag the Patagonia Black Hole Pack 32L as a possible successor for your MLC30. It's about the same capacity, light weight (760g), and retains a reasonable level of style, IMHO.

I sold my Allpa 28 because the zipper was difficult to close when the bag was packed full. I often had to rearrange the contents to make this possible.
