Ski touring backpack help
Having gone from the Soelden 42 to the Raide 40, the Raide is just that much of a better pack to make it worth it. I've got a hundred or so days on snow with each of them, plus using them during other seasons. I haven't used the Mammut. The Raide carries weight worlds better and both compresses down

What volume backpack for long days in the mountains?
I love my Osprey Stratos 34. It's a bit big in the summer but when I start getting into layers and maybe microspikes it's perfect. Definitely try it on though: some people find them too narrow. It's not just about volume. Again, especially when layers and any metallic gear get into the picture, a go

Struggling to Choose the Right Backpack for Travel + Overnight Hiking
I think you're asking too much here. Although one of my friends uses a Kelty Redwing (36?) this way. He says it's tough to get all his multi day stuff secured though. I actually don't own a travel backpack per se. You see the Farpoint 40 recommended a lot. Despite that, it has a just-ok harness (but

Is a Osprey Farpoint 40L + Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC suitable for 4 weeks in Japan/Indonesia?
Try getting your packing list for just the hike into your Sirrus now. Does it fit? If so, don't read the rest of this comment. 😂 I don't think you want a Farpoint 40. And, I don't think you want to take your Sirrus with you. I think you want a large hiking pack you can carry on. This is a bit tricky

Camera/Avy bag recomendations?
Any ski-specific bag with a zippered back panel should work well for you. None of these packs are purpose-built for photography except something from a camera pack maker (Fstop, Shimoda, etc), but these are expensive and overbuilt for carrying camera gear. With just a small body and lens or two, you

Osprey Talon 22L or Osprey Escapist 25L ???
I tried on an Escapist the other day. It fits weird. Honestly I don't think 3-4 L here and there is enough to really distinguish backpacks. At that point, choose on features. I have an Osprey Stratos 34 I love but haven't tried skiing in. I'm not sure if the frame might be too much. I have an Osprey

Is 35L too big? New bag design
Access. You either have to dick around with them a lot to get things in and out or leave them unrolled and sloppy which to me kinda defeats the purpose of having the rolltop in the first place - why not just go top loader if I'm not going to roll it? Especially with larger packs that can have a brai

Needing travel backpack advice
It probably won't. It's almost 30" long and the baggage sizer is 22" long. Travel backpacks come in right around 40 L because they're designed around a 22x14x9 luggage size. If 8" of the Rook's length is the brain (seems like a lot to me) you might be able to get away with it if you don't pack it fu

How many bags do you have and what do you use them for?
Probably about a dozen. Mostly different outdoor sports bags. I use them for outdoor sports. 😂 I actually don't own a purpose-built travel bag. I frequently want to do some outdoors sport or another when I'm traveling and want that bag. Between my Osprey Soelden 42 and my Mystery Ranch 2 Day Assault

Onebag + multi-day hiking (Patagonia / Salkantay): 35–40L hiking pack that still works as carry-on?
Sort of? TBH, I didn't try. I did the Kumano Kodo trail in Japan, staying in inns, so a similar hut-to-hut trip in that sense. But I also brought a really big roller with clothes for before and after and that I used to shuttle home some souvenirs. Anyway, I bought my Osprey Stratos 34 for that trip.
