What are the benefits of switching to freshtomato for the asus rt-ac68u

Power user or not, the biggest advantage of going FT on your router is that Asus declared it EOL beginning of 2024 and there will be no more firmware fixes or updates. Even though Asus did in fact release firmware security fix last year for it, it's not a guarantee. Many old, EOL routers are still u

First time set up but I don't see a wireless option on the network tab?

That's a Broadcom device, wifi will be shit, at best. https://openwrt.org/toh/netgear/r7000

Wi-Fi 8 is not about speed, and that’s exactly why your next network upgrade depends on it

I've had the same router (Netgear r7000) for nearly a decade, (maybe actually longer) and it never needs anything, I even get signal like 50 yards away from my house

Router vs Modem

Read the wiki entry. But you can see in firmware-selector the hw used, on a high level, in this case bxm53xx. https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/?version=SNAPSHOT&target=bcm53xx%2Fgeneric&id=netgear_r7000 Might want to have a look at dd-wrt instead.

How often should a router realistically be replaced?

Like others have already mentioned, unless the Router is receiving updates, then it's time to look into a replacement. OR, change out the firmware from the vendor to an open source project that supports the Router AND is being regularly updated. Checking the most popular firmware replacements I foun

Netgear Nighthawk R7000 - Guest Network

I have no idea what's going on with your R7000, but just offering a tip, if you want a secure up to date and not too difficult UI for it put FreshTomato firmware on it. Then ask AI if you get stuck doing anything you need, they know what FreshTomato is. Make sure you find and carefully follow the Fr

Turned spare routers into a wireless extender setup, free home lab win

Nice job repurposing old hardware, but one thing to keep in mind is security. Be very sure that the router (your interface between the internet/outside and your intranet/inside network) is still receiving firmware upgrades and is supported by the manufacturer. This ensures any exploits/bugs/etc. tha

GL‑iNet Flint 4 (Wi‑Fi 7) shown at CES 2026

Thanks! This looks like the one that will finally retire my Netgear R7000. By god it's been such a workhorse! I've lost track of how many different custom firmwares I've run on it. Freshtomato is my current one, and it's absolutely amazing that I have access to pretty well every modern feature you c
