The T480 is a significant downgrade in almost everything. Worse display, worse CPU, significantly worse battery, worse trackpad, worse speakers. Keyboard, build quality and operating system are all personal preferences, and the only advantages are more ports and having upgradeable RAM and storage. A

I'd try and find a T495 (Ryzen 5 or 7), it's the AMD variant of the T490. More powerful than all three, official W11 support, and can sell for less than both T480 and T490. If battery life is your top concern then a Mac is probably your best choice. If you also want a good display, Apple also leads there. VMs would probably be better done on a desktop but Apple Silicon Macs can run VM software so it's not completely out of the question. IME ThinkPads have long been the
