So my keyboard died, again..

Get a Keychron J2 he. It's relatively inexpensive particularly for a Keychron, it's got a great layout, and it's got TMR sensors and qmk firmware.

please help a keyboard newbie to buy correctly

Get a QMK board so you don't get "helpful" keyboard software preventing you from changing "system" keys. Particularly for a 60% board because you can use mod-tap to create a virtual arrow cluster. recommendations for budget HEs

Keychron J2 HE 8k It's Keychron so the firmware is QMK based, not some random proprietary code base. The source is not yet online but they say it will be within a month, and I've tested the source for the electromechanical version and it works.

Best hall effect/tmr keyboard rn? (With f-buttons)

Keychron J2 HE is $80 on Amazon right now. TMR sensors, QMK firmware, uses Keychron launcher which is a VIA port so it's kind of best in class software.

Do I need Hall Effect?

Try a less expensive board and see if it has an effect? Keychron J2 HE is a decent QMK-firmware option, and Launcher is better than 90% of the alternatives... I haven't tried Wootility so I can't say 100%. https://www.amazon.com/Keychron-Keyboard-Hot-Swappable-Ultra-Fast-Non-Shine-Through/dp/B0GD7FL

MonsGeek FUN68he just a rebranded Epomaker with the same Mac bugs?

Monsgeek uses what they call their "Cloud" driver, it's one of many almost identical proprietary configuration programs for legacy firmware keyboards. I have found it to be less awful than most proprietary configurators but I have also read that the magnetic version of it is somewhat behind the curv
