Perhaps you could try the iFLYTEK AINOTE Air 2? It's not as big as a tablet, but not as small as a phone either, just the right size to carry around(for me). I feel its paper-like screen would be perfect for drawing. I saw an artist on Instagram using it to create black and white comics.

An E Ink tablet with an open OS is the answer. The iFLYTEK AINOTE Air 2 lets you handwrite directly in the margins of your PDFs as if they were print-outs. Because it's Android-based, you can use powerful reference manager apps like Zotero. All your annotated PDFs and notes are in one place, searcha

you should seriously look into the iFLYTEK AINOTE Air 2. It is right in your sweet spot at 8.2 inches and is remarkably thin at just 5mm and light (~230g), making it perfect for one-handed reading. You can also use it to download the kindle/kobo/libby app because of its open OS. They tend to lean in

If you have migraines, switch to E-Ink. I recommend the iFlytek AiNote Air 2. It has a paper-like display (zero eye strain) but adds a 4-mic array to transcribe lectures while you write. It’s a lifesaver for long sessions where you don't want to stare at a glowing screen.

Fast shouldn’t be the top priority in case of e-ink devices, as the technology still provides a decent experience, but with slightly noticeable slowness. I have a 8.2-inch device, an iFlytek AINote Air 2. An amazing device for everything you need except scientific papers. This is due to device scree

I completely understand your concern about screen size. The AINOTE Air 2 (8.2”) has been my main device for quite some time, and I genuinely enjoy it for note-taking, meetings, and quick idea capture. It’s compact, lightweight, and ideal for portability. As for the AINOTE 2 (10.65”), it’s important
