I have 3x Coway AirMega 250 units (one in each bedroom) and have not had any chemical smell issues at all FWIW. I’m guessing it can depend on the people, as some are more sensitive to certain smells than others.

No such thing is overkill when it come to air purifier. I run Coway 250 in every bedroom. The benefit of running a decent size unit is that you're able to run it on lower speed and it still manage to output decent cfm.
