PSA: If you’re the type to bring a backpack as your carry-on (instead of a roller bag), bring a small item alongside it so they can’t force you to put it under your seat.
Just took a cotopaxi allpa 50L backpack on a two week trip around Europe. The top compartment detaches and you can use it as your personal item, while the rest of the backpack goes into the storage bin. Can’t recommend it enough

Bag combination advice
There are bags that separate into two pieces that serve as carryon and personal item. Cotopaxi Allpa 50 Adventure is a good example, Osprey 55, and Thule Landmark.
